Orlando Immunology Center begins enrollment this September for its first-ever influenza clinical study, a new area of research for our team.
The study evaluates an investigational antiviral drug conjugate in adults and adolescents at higher risk of developing complications from the flu. “This is an exciting milestone for OIC,” says Dr. Charlotte-Paige Rolle, Director of Research Operations. “Influenza is something nearly every family deals with, and we’re glad to bring this kind of research to our community.”
Here’s how it works: the active part of the antiviral zanamivir is attached to a portion of a human monoclonal antibody. That combination allows the investigational product to remain in the body for approximately six months, far longer than zanamivir would last on its own.
Researchers are looking to answer two questions: can the study drug help prevent influenza in the first place, and if someone does get the flu, can it reduce how severe their symptoms are?
Participants receive a single dose and are followed for about six months afterward. They can still get their regular seasonal flu vaccine after enrolling, and each study visit comes with a $150 stipend.
