What is an STI?

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections passed from one person to another through sexual contact. Regular screening is essential to maintain sexual health.

STIs We Screen, Diagnose, & Treat

  • Chlamydia
  • Genital Warts
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • HIV
  • Herpes
  • Hepatitis C
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Monkeypox

The Importance of STI Screening

Regular STI screening is crucial for detecting infections early, even when symptoms are not present. Early detection allows for prompt treatment, reducing the risk of complications and transmission to others.

Blood work alone is NOT sufficient for a comprehensive STI screening, as some infections require different methods for accurate detection.

Blood Testng

Blood tests are essential for detecting infections like HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis.

Urine Testing

Urine tests are used for detecting infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea. It targets urethral & bladder infections in comprehensive STD screenings.

Rectal Swabs

Rectal swabs are necessary for detecting infections in the rectum, particularly for individuals who engage in anal sex.

Oral Swabs

Oral Swabs are important for identifying infections in the throat, especially for those who engage in oral sex.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

HPV is a common virus that can lead to certain cancers and genital warts. It is one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections.

HPV is a virus transmitted through contact with the skin and mucosal membranes found in the mouth, throat, vagina, cervix, anus and penis. There are over 100 HPV strains that can affect the human body. The vast majority of these viruses affect the skin and cause benign warts. About 40 HPV types are sexually transmitted and about 16 of those strains cause lesions that can progress to dysplasia and cancer. A person can be infected with multiple HPV strains simultaneously.

Men and women infected with HPV can unknowingly spread the virus as the infection may present no symptoms and infected individuals may not realize that they carry it. Though a condom may help reduce transmission, HPV is spread via skin-to-skin contact through the moist layer of skin and can therefore be passed onto a partner even when a condom is used. Nevertheless, safe sex practices including the use of condoms should still be utilized as a method to reduce the likelihood of transmission.
