Why Preventive Medical Care Matters to You
We only have one life! So live your happiest, healthiest life through prevention!
What is preventive medical care?
Preventive medical care is any medical service that will help prevent an emergency or chronic condition. “I’m active and feel great – I don’t need a doctor!” That’s the entire purpose! To keep you that way!
It promotes an overall health and wellness. Ultimately, the goal is to stay healthy by identifying any medical issues early and treat them. Therefore the impact to your health can be greatly reduced. As a result, you live a longer, healthier and happier life. (Spoiler alert: the secret to a lifetime of better health is below.)
“A lot of ailments have no symptoms and only a proper screening after identification of risk factors will help with the diagnosis. Treatment and cure are a must but prevention is ideal” – Dr. Federico Hinestrosa
So what exactly is it?
Seeing doctor regularly, annual physicals and dental cleanings are types of preventive medical visits. During your visit, the provider will complete a medical evaluation. Then perhaps recommend preventative measures. Your probably familiar with some of them. For instance, vaccines, dental cleanings, allergy medication, contraception and some medications are prevention measures. In addition, routine screenings, high cholesterol, tests for skin cancer, and colonoscopies are also effective prevention methods. Below are some examples of healthcare screenings that are beneficial for all adults:
- Overall Physical Wellness Evaluation
- Height and weight/Body Mass Index (BMI) – your BMI is a number calculated from your body weight and height to screen for overweight or obesity.
- Blood pressure
- Screen for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and Hepatitis
- Cholesterol screening
- Colorectal cancer screening
- Age-specific immunizations
- Overall Mental Wellness Evaluation
Whats the secret behind preventative medical care?
YOU! Ok, so maybe that not exactly a secret, but you are the most important part of living a healthier life. Prevention only works if you are an active partner in achieving your healthcare goals. The first step is a good relationship with your provider. Being open and honest is vital. This allows your provider to develop the best healthcare experience tailored to you. As a result, this collaborative process ensures that you and your family can stay healthy and happy.
